Pau Showjumping

The fun thing about eventing in France is that they tend to play around with the schedule and you are never quite sure when anything is going to happen.  When the jog was moved to 1.30pm from 8.30 am it left a fair amount of ‘hanging around’ time on Sunday morning with desultory truck packing and various bikes being retrieved from around the truck park.  The final session of the Driving Championship was causing great excitement in the main arena and then finally Tom and Toledo got the thumbs up from the ground Jury and suddenly everything seemed to happen very quickly.

The showjumping at Pau is always big and square and this year was no different.  There were a few cricket scores and the usual hard luck stories but Tom and Toledo lived up to their stellar reputation and put the pressure on those above him with a clear in time leaving them in 5th spot.

The ones above were a classy bunch though and they also failed to lower any poles which was great for Laura Collett who won but we did rather hope that Toledo’s excellence in this phase may see him creep a bit higher!

Still, Tom could not possibly be disappointed with yet another sub 20 and double clear at 5 star and the partnership that these two have is really incredible.  Toledo has another big win in him for sure, it just wasn’t meant to be this week.

All credit to Pau and their organisers, they declared back in July that they would run and they have never wavered and they made sure that the event was the best it could be.  There were no ‘covid’ excuses here for lack of preparation and they can be rightly proud of the show they put on.

And that’s a wrap for 2020 as Le Pouget has cancelled and BE have run their last event in the UK.  Tom and his team have made the most of the manic last half season and it has been fun….but we all hope to have just a little more normality in 2021!
